Our own co-founder at Songtools, Gonzalo Mahou, has firsthand experience seeing the power of artist collaborations. Here’s what he had to say about it:

“My artist James Hersey wrote a song called Coming Over, and posted a rooftop performance of it on YouTube. This led to some viral attention thanks to a remix from Austrian remixer filous (this would be his debut track). The song made it across to Kygo, who was just emerging as a DJ at the time. Kygo played the song for Dillon Francis, and the two reached out to James to form a collaboration. The resulting track peaked at #1 on the BillBoard Dance Charts and was the first number one entry for all three artists. The artists performed the track together several times over many years from Coachella to Lollapalooza, and to date it remains Dillon Francis‘ second most successful track (at 160M streams), after „Get Low“.

James went on to collaborate with filous on another track, „How Hard I Try“ which stayed in the Top 40 German Airplay charts for most of the year it was released.

As a manager, I learned the true value of creative collaborations and continued to encourage them for all my artists. They can be at best a change of winds, and at worst a breath of fresh air.”

Tips on Finding and Approaching Potential Partners

  1. Identify Complementary Artists/Brands: Look for artists or brands that have a similar or complementary style and audience. This alignment ensures that the collaboration feels natural and is likely to be well-received by both fan bases.
  2. Engage on Social Media: Follow potential collaborators on social media and engage with their content. Comment on their posts, share their music, and build a genuine connection before approaching them for a collaboration.
  3. Attend Networking Events: Participate in music conferences, industry events, and local shows to meet potential collaborators in person. Building relationships face-to-face can be more impactful than online interactions.
  4. Leverage Existing Connections: Reach out to mutual contacts who can introduce you to potential collaborators. Personal recommendations can add credibility to your proposal.
  5. Propose a Clear and Specific Idea: When approaching a potential partner, have a clear and specific collaboration idea. Outline the benefits for both parties and provide a vision for the project. This demonstrates your professionalism and commitment.
  6. Be Open to Negotiation: Be flexible and open to your partner's ideas and suggestions. A successful collaboration often involves compromise and mutual respect.
  7. Document Agreements: Once a collaboration is agreed upon, document the terms in writing. This can include details about creative input, resource sharing, promotional efforts, and financial arrangements to avoid misunderstandings.
